Every meter of Harris Tweed® is more than a fabric - it is the result of a law. No other cloth in the world is protected by its own parliament. Since 1993, the Harris Tweed Act has stipulated that only fabrics woven by hand in the Outer Hebrides - from pure new wool, on traditional looms, in the homes of the weavers - may bear this name.
The sheep come from the windswept pastures of the north. Their wool is washed, dyed and spun on the Isle of Lewis. The yarn goes into the hands of those families who have been weaving for generations - not as an industry, but as a cultural technique.
The result is a fabric with substance and character. Robust, resistant and yet lively in its texture. No two fabrics are the same. Everyone talks about weather, time and hands - in a world that is becoming increasingly dematerialized.
